its an aspire VX5-591G

I usually have  it connected in my desk while working or gaming but now it sputters and stops direct power when the battery is full.

First do a systematic check of all charging components. Check your side laptop lug where the charger plug plugs into the laptop, as that could be faulty or worn out and/or your charger could be faulty, check those out and also, check infernally the AC jack cord and plug that plugs into the laptops mainboard. Now, batteries especially replacement batteries (are cheap and recycled) they are not new batteries that are constructed from scratch, especially those made in China that always don't charge properly and/or are sometimes faulty and you might as well throw them away (if they are out of whatever warranty you get on them?) as they don't always charge completely even though they are plugged in always to the charger and mains, also, the windows charge meter is not always showing the charge correctly, which is another problem.

The example caption below (sorry for the quality of the photo as I had to blow it up) is on an Aspire V3-571G which is a 9 year old laptop and is similar to your VX5-591G vintage, the battery is a cheap Chinese replacement battery, this caption below is showing "83% available (pugged in)" and its not charging but the system works perfectly and not like yours, the best thing and to try first, is to periodically disconnect the charger from the battery (or better still do a Calibration of your battery) or run the battery down to about 10% on battery only power and then recharge the battery again, as that could fix the charging problems if its the battery, if they don't, then its either your charger, the charger plug or what I've mentioned above on your VX5-591G laptop. Check all these things out.
