Depends on the headset you have. What headset brand & model? Most new laptops work with the OMTP 3.5mm 4-element trrs plug as shown in the imaga below. Plug the headset in. Right click on the speaker icon in the right tray. Click open sounds settings. Click sound control panel in right pane. In the box that pops up click on the recording tab. There should be two mics listed. The default internal laptop mic and the headset mic. Click on the headset mic so it's active. If you don't see the headset mic, then your headset is probably incompatible with your laptop and you should try another headset brand and model. Jack E/NJ

Did you right click the speaker icon and follow directions on my previous post? This is how you can tell if it's compatible or not. Do you see two mics in the sound control panel box? Jack E

OK. Your headset doesn't seem to be compatible. Try another headset model from another manufacturer. Buy it from a seller who accepts returns if it doesn't work. Jack E/NJ.

Go back to sound control panel. Click recording tab. Click on microphone device. Click properties button. Click levels tab. Slide both microphone volume and boost levels to the right full volume. Jack E/NJ

How do you know that "nothing happened" when turning up the mic volume without testing the microphone? Jack E/NJ

If the laptop internal mic is OK, then the headset mic is NOT OK. The headset you have is NOT compatible. So you need to try another brand & model of headset. Jack E/NJ

Acer lumps your headset mic and laptop's internal mic together under a single name (aka mic array).

Set it as "headset" in the Realtek Audio Console.

Lightly tap the headset mic, if the signal meter jumps then your headset mic is working.
