X35 Firmware Fail

So even though I read the many complaints and concerns about the X35 I went ahead and ordered one anyway. I figured I’d be likely to get a model newer than what required the optional firmware update. I was wrong.

Is there some trick to getting the firmware update to install? After letting it run for about 30 seconds it fails with no error. Just says it could not be applied and no error or log.

I checked:

  • using DisplayPort

  • running an RTX 2080S

  • latest drivers (for both)

  • HDR is disabled

  • all background programs are closed

  • tried both with g-sync on and off in nvidia control panel

Also, the speakers on the display randomly stop working. Seems to be after a reboot. A complete power down seems to make them work. And the RGB Light Sense (LED software) shows the monitor but says it cannot connect.

I’m so disappointed and at the same time really don’t want to send this thing back. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I do now have a case open with Acer, and am waiting for a call back from what I am told is a more knowledgeable technician. Which is good, since the person I was on chat with told me the X35 has no speakers, which is why they were not working.

I assume unrelated to firmware, another thing I am noticing is that as I move my mouse around the screen a ... wash of white (brightness) follows it around. As I move between panels, the mouse causes a splotch of brightness to follow it. I cannot explain it better than that. It's VERY noticeable when the PC is shutting down (Windows 10 gray screen), but also there on the desktop. Even in other apps.

EDIT: It's not just the mouse - that is just an example. Any bright object on the screen causes the 'wash' behind it.

Is this a brightness setting I need to fix?

Side note - the colors on this monitor are beautiful. Man I hope I can quiet the fan and fix the behind-the-mouse-light-bleed.

Turn off Windows 10 HDR bro.
    This should do the trick.
