6 gig RAM, can that be upgraded to 12 gig?
 - i tried an 8 gig crucial nd got  black screen. I went back to my original setup and it works as before.

Can I install an SSD or just replace the HDD?

About ram, can you download the cpuz program? On the ssd, you can install a 2.5 "ssd: https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/Acer-Aspire-R3-471T/15911 and https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/Acer-Aspire-R3-471TG/17366

Spec says 12GB maximum memory, so an 8GB stick should max you out. Did you buy the same speed as the stock memory? Different speeds might or might not work at all, and if it does work it'll be clocked down to the system speed. It should be DDR3L-1600 MHz, and the L is important.
The HDD is a normal SATA 2.5" drive, you can replace it with a different HDD or a SSD (I'd recommend the SSD).
The screen for your Aspire R3-471T is Acer part number: 6M.MP5N7.001. Search on that number to see if it's worthwhile to repair.
