Gateway All-in-One Model ZX4270

I cannot recall if this coincided with upgrading to windows 10 a couple years back, but my dvd rom has stopped detecting discs. It spins and physically seems to work, however is not actually detecting correctly.

I've tried restoring the PC, updating drivers, etc, but nothing seems to work.

Anyone familiar by chance and or have other suggestions?

Thank you!

Old units mostly wont support win10. even if its a free update of win 10 from MS. its not compatible for all the units. what was the original OS you had on this unit. there can be conflicts of the new os. try to do a reset if you have orginal disk.

We were on Windows 8.1.  I suspect what you're saying is the case... this unit is from around 2012 or so if I remember correctly.  You think that's the case??  If so, I'm thinking an external DVD drive is more worth the trouble than trying to restore (I don't have the original disc unfortunately) to an older OS.

    Thanks so much!

Mostly windows will support win10 drivers. but are you sure its win8. since its 2012 gateway there is a chance of win7 or win vista. And yes it can be drive issue also. try to clean it if possible. or do a reset/

Yep it was definitely Windows 8, and I took advantage of the period of time where they were offering Windows 10 upgrades for free.  I think (can't remember for certain) that it was after this that we noticed the DVD drive not working as expected.  it's really more a frustrating / curious issue than anything else, since I got an external drive.

Yeah, that's not likely the problem, DVD drivers haven't changed much over the years. When you put a disc in and it spins up, does it sound like it's seeking to try to read? There are several failure modes a drive can get into that end up failing to read discs...

Yep - it spins as if it's trying to read, but I can't actually access its contents (typically trying via file explorer).  Supposedly per device manager the drivers are up to date and the device is working "properly".

And @christy1, will do - thanks all!

Does the drive show up in Windows saying there's no disc inserted, or does it not show at all? Not at all likely just means the SATA cable is disconnected. Showing up but not recognizing the disc is more likely to be a bad drive.

The latter unfortunately. Thanks for the reply, good info to know. Although if it were a cable, is it relatively easy to get inside these all in ones?

There are a couple of screws hidden behind rubber feet that you have to remove, plus you need to release the ODD tray (either before powering down or use a paper clip in the release button hole) to get to the point where you can work your way around to release the cover. Once it's open you can remove the one mounting screw and the two cables to remove the ODD. There is a bracket and the bezel on the drive that you want to hang onto, since a new drive will not have matching ones. The drive is a standard super-multi slimline. Any of those should work as long as they match the connectors.
