XPG SX8200 Pro not performing as expected with Nitro 5 AN515-55

I have a new Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55 and is happy with it so I upgraded it to an ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB nvme PCIe ssd but it is not performing as it should. Is there any settings I need to change or configuration I need to set?

I have changed my BIOS to AHCI instead of the RST Optane RAID already. The AData Toolbox says the sx8200 pro nvme is 100% healthy and HWiNFO64 reports my PCI-Express at 4x lanes.

What am I missing? My WD SN530 nvme that came with the laptop is faster than the SX8200 according to CrystalDiskMark. The SX8200 Pro is now in slot 1 with the OS. I have cloned my WD SN530 to it and swapped them. Here's my HWinfo and CrystalDiskMark benchmark. Please help.

    Hi,
You could try updating Windows version to 10.0.19041.804, go to settings, click Update and Security.

I already have the latest build.

  • You could try CDM version 6.0.2 and see whether it gives you different benchmark results.

Tried the version 6.0.2. Gave a little bit better results but still half the intended speed. I do however feel like loading times are faster with this drive.

I cloned my WD SN503 to get this and it was still on Optane RAID then. Would that be the case? I'll do a clean install today with AHCI enabled already and see what happens.

Yes, try the clean install and see whether it improves the performance, if that doesn't help return the drive for a replacement or get another drive like Samsung or WD SN750, before you send it contact ADATA customer support explain the problem, they may have some solution.

I spent the entire day doing the clean install and putting my programs back together. Unfortunately, it did not help. I am on Windows 10 20H2 already.

It seems the read speed it only half. I'll see if I can contact ADATA. :( Might be a defective unit.

Yes, it could be defective unit, even a 1TB SN530 gives similar benchmark in this model but Samsung drive gives better BM.

  • I would test the ssd on another computer. Then, I would try to update the firmware with the adata ssd tool box.

I just hope there's a fix or I'm doing something wrong so I can correct it rather than having it replaced since my Windows 10 is now here. But I have raised a ticket with ADATA to check.

Unfortunately, I do not have another computer that can use an nvme pcie drive and my Windows 10 is now here. I shouldn't have erased my initial primary drive but I was confident this would be faster.

Also, the ADATA Toolbox said my firmware version is 32B3T8EA which said it was the latest one when I initially checked before installing Win 10. Is it?
  • try uninstalling and deleting the sata ahci controller driver in the device manager, through windows security mode and leave the standard Microsoft driver installed. Then, double-check the ssd's performance again through the crystaldiskmark.

@egydiocoelho that won't affect my boot or windows 10? So I do it in safe mode?

    Is this the one?

I have yet to try an uninstall and reinstall the AHCI controller. Do I remove it under safe mode then restart and have it reinstalled again then check?

Instead of the standard MS NVME controller drivers, I tried the Samsung NVME drivers and the modded Samsung NVME drivers which did not help and made it a little worse. I went back to the MS NVME controller drivers. I'll try the AHCI controller next.

I have been reading up on PCI-E lanes and do you think this matters? I might be out of lanes?

    here's my current setup:
    Acer Nitro 5 - AN515-55 (Windows 10 20H2)
    Bios v1.10
    Motherboard chipset - Intel HM470*(Comet Lake PCH-H)
    Intel i5 - 10300H
    2x8GB DDR4 3200Mhz Dual channel
    Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GDDR6

    Drives: (used all slots)
    2.5" WD HDD 1TB 5400 RPM Serial ATA 6Gb/s
    XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB Nvme v1.3 (PCIe 4x 8.0 GT/s)  - Slot 1 (which supports NVME, PCIE)
    WD SN530 512GB Nvme v1.4 (PCIe 4x 8.0 GT/s) - Slot 2 (which supports NVME, PCIE, SATA)

Are they sharing PCIe lanes? But HWinfo64 is saying both are at max link width of 4x and current link width of 4x.

    SX 8200 Pro

    WD SN530

Also, found some solutions that aligning the partition worked for them but when I tried it on Mini Partition Tool it says my drive does not need to be aligned. All trim and defrag were done.

Not a big complaint but I would like to get my money's worth on the XPG SX8200 Pro. AData hasn't responded to my ticket yet and I am thinking I might be limiting something with my drivers or controllers...

Thanks for the help, Nitro gods!

When to safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the driver and restarted to normal mode. Had this now:

I was hopeful but unfortunately, it did not work.
  • does this model have three m2 2280 slots? have you tested the ssd on the other m2 2280 ports and tried to update the SSD firmware?

Yes, my Nitro 5 AN515-55 has 2 M2.2280 slots. I initially tested it in the 2nd slot with the same results. But now that I have the clean install, I haven't. hmmm maybe I will try swapping the slots again to check. Here's my config now:

    Drives: (used all slots)
    2.5" WD HDD 1TB 5400 RPM Serial ATA 6Gb/s
    XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB Nvme v1.3 (PCIe 4x 8.0 GT/s)  - Slot 1 (which supports NVME, PCIE)
    WD SN530 512GB Nvme v1.4 (PCIe 4x 8.0 GT/s) - Slot 2 (which supports NVME, PCIE, SATA)

My WD SN530 SSD has faster read speed. I'll try switching them to see if it will make any difference.

Also, when I installed the SX8200 Pro the ADATA toolbox said it has the latest firmware. right now I can't check anymore since it has my Windows 10 installed on it.

Unfortunately, this is the only device I have that supports M2 nvme drivers. :(

I have yet to swap the slots. I'll try to do it today and update this thread.

The ADATA SSD Tool says the SSD firmware is up to date.

My mainboard firmware, I am not sure. How do I update that? I updated my BIOS from 1.04 directly to the latest 1.10 for Acer Nitro 5 AN515-55. I used all the drivers in the Acer website.
  • First enable safe boot and restart windows. Then, go to the device manager and then uninstall and delete the sata ahci controller driver and restart windows windows. Then, run a new test with the crystaldiskmark.
