Hi!

The touchpad of my laptop, model Nitro AN515-54, stops and starts working randomly. The touchpad stops working out of nowhere, and I have to either press Fn + F7 multiple times, or restart my PC and it may or may not resume working. I have tried multiple ways suggested in answers present on this site.
1. Tried to update my touchpad driver from https://www.acer.com/ac/en/IN/content/drivers
2. Installed Driver Easy Pro which shows all related drives in latest and updated version
3. Tried Disconnecting my battery
4. Tried uninstalling the driver from Device Manager and then restarting windows
5. Confirming if the touchpad is enabled in Settings -> Devices
But none of the above fixed the problem permanently.

At last, I tried resetting my Windows (Choosing 'Download from Cloud' to get the latest Windows), but faced the same problem after 2 hours of resetting.

My BIOS version/Date is Insyde Corp. V1.32, 16-09-2020.

Can someone please help me finding the permanent fix for the problem?

Thanks in advance!
Sajal

    Hi,
You could try reinstalling the Serial IO driver version 30.100.2020.7 from here:Product Support | Acer United Kingdom
Extract the .zip file, open the extracted folder, right click "...I2C_CNL.inf" file and select Install.

Tried reinstalling the Serial IO driver as mentioned above. The touchpad worked for an hour or so, and now even Fn+F7 or restarting the laptop is not fixing the issue. Also I observe that majority of times, touchpad works fine till I enter PIN and stops working as soon as I login.
  • Hi,
Try pressing F7 button only without pressing Fn button and see whether it helps.

Nothing happens when F7 is pressed without Fn. Tried pressing twice, but still no luck.
  • Did this problem occur after any windows update?

I purchased this laptop on 22nd July 2020 and did a routine update in August. I am not sure if the problem can be attributed to the Windows Update.

Also, if it was a Windows issue, Windows Reset would have fixed it, right?
  • Yes, try reinstalling windows by pressing alt + f10 before the acer logo.

I have already reset my windows last week, but the problem is still not fixed.

Within today, the touchpad stopped and started working thrice.

I am speculating it is a hardware issue, but I am not able to understand what is causing this fluctuation. @egydiocoelho any idea?

  • When you change the touchpad to basic in the bios, does the same problem occur?

I don't have a touchpad option in BIOS -> Main Menu
PS. I have never upgraded my BIOS.

Found this solution but couldn't try it due to the above issue.

An engineer changed the touchpad and the issue was still there. This may tell that either it is a Software issue or a mother board issue.

Is there any Software troubleshooting option other than the listed below:
    1. Update touchpad driver (Synaptics/ElanTech) from https://www.acer.com/ac/en/IN/content/drivers
    2. Update drivers using Driver Easy Pro
    3. Disconnect and reconnect the battery
    4. Uninstall the driver from Device Manager and then restart the laptop
    5. Confirm if the touchpad is enabled in Settings -> Devices
    6. Change touchpad settings to primary in BIOS (Not available for me)
    7. Perform Hardware troubleshooting (Not available for me)
    8. Update Serial IO driver from https://www.acer.com/ac/en/IN/content/drivers
    9. Upgrade Windows/BIOS
    10. Reset Windows

    Tried all the above fixes

    Thanks,
    Sajal

You have done most of the fixes but give this a try, might resolve the problem or not but worth a try, reinstall Quick Access Application, go to acer support site and download Quick Access App, then go to Programs under Control panel and uninstall current installation,  without rebooting install the downloaded application and see whether it helps.

The touchpad stopped working in the evening and was not fixed even after multiple restarts. When I reinstalled the Serial IO driver and rebooted, touchpad worked. It has been 2 hours and it's working so far. I will try the above solution when the touchpad stops working next time.
  • I would also try to reset the battery: turn off the notebook, disconnect the power adapter, press the power button for thirty seconds and leave the notebook off for thirty minutes.

I did the same (meant the same when I said disconnect and reconnect the battery), but I turned on the computer after 15 minutes of resetting the battery.

That's encouraging and hope it fixes the problem permanently.🤞
  • Also make sure that windows update installs a newer driver for the synaptics driver.
