We cannot get in with her Microsoft email because she doesn’t remember what year she put for her birthday (she says she doesn’t remember what year she put because she doesn’t like to reveal  her real age!). I have tried various ways to reset the computer to factory settings using F 11, alt F 10, Fun F10, etc but none of them take her to the recovery screen. It seems the only option for her is to buy a new computer but it seems like overkill since she only uses it for web surfing and email, so I would really love to just reset it, any other suggestions on how to get this to work please?

If she is using her Microsoft account to login, then she can go through their password reset process. I believe there's a way to deal with that without knowing all the security questions. You may have to get on the phone with them though... Better some time on hold with them than buying a new computer, that's for sure. :)
