The laptop, as far as I can tell, appears to be working perfectly except the audio won't come out of the speakers.

I suspect, though I can't be certain, that this happened only after using an HDMI cable to connect the laptop to a monitor with speakers, the Dell S2721Q.

It can still connect to external speakers and output audio there. It can still output audio through headphones, no problems.

I've gone into settings and made sure the Sound Output was chosen as speakers. This causes the external speakers or headphones to stop (if they were being used), but the laptop speakers remain silent.

I've looked at the Sound Control Panel and tried disabling and re-enabling the speakers.

I checked out Device Manager, reinstalled the audio drivers, and restarted the computer. Nothing changed.

I tried downloading the latest audio drivers from Acer's website and installing them.

I tried installing the High Definition Audio Device drivers instead of the Realtek drivers, based on a suggestion I read on this forum.

Volume controls all appear to be functional.

The Volume Mixer registers that sound is supposed to be produced, the little green bar jumps up and down, even when the speakers are silent.

I checked to see when Windows 10 was last updated if that might have mattered, but it was over a week ago.

I might try re-installing Windows 10 at some point, but I've never done so before, and there are work-sensitive applications that were a struggle to set up the first time, so odds are I won't be doing that for another month, when there's a long vacation from work and I won't have to worry about taking a few extra days to get the laptop totally functional again.

I figured it out.  It had been automatically syncing to bluetooth headphones, which only disabled the built-in speakers.
