There are a lot of things that affect battery life, and some can cause a big difference. What are you running for an antivirus? Often those do a lot of disk activity, both during a scan and while running in the background, and that activity uses power. Also networking uses a fair amount of power for the WiFi and Bluetooth radios. Also Windows itself can get confused as to how much power is really left in the battery and will want to warn about a low battery earlier than needed. That can usually be solved with a battery recalibration in Windows: Disconnect power and run the laptop until it shuts down due to low battery, plug the power in and wait for it to indicate a full charge, then turn it back on and repeat the process. It normally takes a couple of cycles through to get the stats back to the real values.

All of this is par for the course nowadays and I would expect a laptop battery to be able to handle this if its advertised for 7 hours
I got gifted one of these laptops and agree with OP that the battery life is rubbish, and getting over 2 hours unplugged is a bonus.

My Spin 5 gets perfectly reasonable battery life with it set almost stock (I removed the antivirus that was bundled and don't have Bluetooth devices connected). Maximum run time is stated to be 15 hours, real life run time I see is between 6 and 8 hours. Reviews seem to all say in the 8 hour range and I'd bet that if I did everything right I could run it for the full 15 hours, albeit without actually getting any use from it during that time. :)
