CPU Temperature Spike

Hi All,

I've been using Predator 17X GX-792 for the last 18 months. Never overclocked, always used the normal preset and kept the laptop above a large cooling pad. I frequently clean the exhausts and the grills with a vacuum cleaner.

CPU: i7-7820HK
GPU: GTX-1080

The weather is around 30C. At idle, temperatures are around 55C. When I browse the internet, launch a game or use windows the cpu temperature jumps to mid 70s. CPU fan speed is around 2700 rpms during browsing, above 3500 during gaming. When fans speed up, the temperature of both components drop a few degrees. However, the cpu temperature is often higher than gpu temperature.
Isn't that strange?

What temperatures do you get when using your laptops?
Should I open the laptop case, clean the interior and renew the thermal paste?

Those are very normal temps for a laptop like the Predator 17X GX-792, if your GX-792 gets over a designated high temperature the laptop will automatically turn off. The Predator 17X GX-792 has an extensive array of case venting for cross flow ventilation so you can try to repaste your cpu/gpu with a good high temp paste like the “thermal grizzly NEW Kryonaut Extreme” and use the “Pea Dot” method to repaste.

But remember, a laptops does overheat and the only remedy for their thermal heat is how well it dissipates heat, its not like a desktop where you can use water cooling or bigger fans, all cooling has to be done externally and/or drastic modification of the case.

In my opinion your Predator 17X GX-792 temps are at a normal range and you are using everything that is available to cool a laptop like the Predator 17X GX-792 the only other alternative is for you to do drastic case mods, water cooling mods which entails very complicated modifications which needs expertise and experience as you might destroy your laptop, its up to you.
