Windows Updates updating video driver which causes systems to crash - Acer Aspire E5-576G

Hello,

We have multiple Acer Aspire E5-576G laptops that are all seeing the same issue occur where once Windows updates are ran and the video driver is updated, the systems shutdown unexpectedly. In order to resolve this issue, we must manually go in and revert the video driver back in order to prevent the laptop from crashing. Is anyone else seeing this issue occur on this model? If so, what are you doing to resolve this issue long-term?

Thanks!

Use window update hide tool to hide that update
    Download link→ http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/2/F22D5FDB-59CD-4275-8C95-1BE17BF70B21/wushowhide.diagcab

To run the troubleshooter, open wushowhide.diagcab, select Next, and then follow the instructions in the troubleshooter to hide the problematic driver or update
(Btw, Download latest amd/nvidia software by selecting your gpu to update gpu driver)

Windows updates usually pushes outdated drivers anyway.

The safest way to deal with this problem is to get ahead of it. Intel no longer restricts generic DCH driver on an OEM computer.

    https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-intel-unlocks-graphics-drivers-so-you-can-now-bypass-oem-customizations/

The problem is that Intel (assuming that's what you have) doesn't allow OEM legacy graphics driver to migrate directly to generic DCH driver.

    So you may try this:

    1) switch to Microsoft's generic graphics driver
    2) download and install latest Intel DCH driver (for your Intel graphics chip) from Intel's website

If you are successful, then your graphics driver will be newer than whatever Windows Update offers --- so Windows Update will not offer you that graphics driver update.

@LoganKozelWe have multiple Acer Aspire E5-576G laptops
I am planning to upgrade my graphic driver based on what I read on Intel website now that Win DCH is unlocked for OEM drivers and is what @Joe9844 wrote. Would be good to know what is your exact model number in front of E5-576G- XXXX.

@Joe9844 for my model Aspire E 15 E5-576G-5762, what do you suggest should I try my luck simply executing the exe directly and hope no problems will occur as it is an old non Win DCH OEM driver but now since April 2020 ver 26.20.100.8141 and thereon newer versions, but won't this issue yet be resolved now that we are on ver
27.20.100.9126 4th Jan 2021? Also another question, as per CPUid my CPU is i5 8250U Kabylake but nowhere in the whole list the name of Kabylake is mentioned so would this be safe to install? Also on my model technically Intel Extreme Tuning Utility was not being able to be installed but don't recall how but I managed to do it by researching on the net but never ever changed settings with it, would I need to uninstall it beforehand and reboot before I even get to the point of installing the Win DCH drivers from Intel. The Intel utility still says in contradiction to Intel's own webpage info that installing Win DCH on OEM may cause issues, what is to be finally done?

We are talking about "policies", not some "technical" issues that are preventing OEM restricted legacy drivers to migrate to generic DCH drivers.

We simply do not know whether Intel loosens up their driver updating policies or not.

There is really no harm in running the DCH installer to see if it will install. The worst thing will just say your computer is incompatible to the DCH drivers.

I am looking at it from a technical viewpoint due to the fact Intel mentioned OEM drivers are customized and installing Intel win DCH driver may render some functionality inoperable and hence to look toward Manufacturer site for graphic driver update but more than that there was a line mentioning somewhere (will have to search) it can have Catastrophic effect on the system, now it was in what context exactly will have to check and read again. Earlier Intel driver utility used to detect and present driver update available but now even with the move to Win DCH from OEM transition being un-hindered, yet somehow currently the Intel driver detect utility does not show driver update available for the graphics. I read what you are saying and thanks for your input and will read and ask around some more.

The catastrophic effect refers to installing DCH by old methods (i.e. device manager). DCH drivers must be installed by the installer.exe.

Covid-19 is rendering all the official FAQ's as outdated. All we know that is at the beginning of the covid-19 in April 2020, Intel PR was telling the press (i.e. my link to the zdnet article) about computers with OEM DCH drivers are safe to use Intel's generic DCH drivers.
