Acer Aspire 5 Slim A515-43-R19L Qualcomm Atheros QCNFA344A (QCA61x4) connectivity issues

TLDR: new aspire 5 with Qualcomm Atheros had issues connecting to my wifi. Software troubleshooting did not yield any results. Swapped out wifi card. Currently works okay. 

I bought the aforementioned laptop new from Amazon for my dad and received it a couple of days ago. When I was setting up the new laptop, I was unable to connect to my home’s WIFI. I finished setup using ethernet and then started troubleshooting. 


Detailed description of the problem:

1. on attempting to connect to my home wifi network, windows would be “unable to connect to network”, and if I attempted this a couple of times, the wifi card would “shut down” (I think), and thereafter windows would not be able to display any wifi network (including other previously discovered networks from neighbours, etc.) until the computer was restarted or the driver was reset (by running diagnostics). Other devices on my network are working fine.


2. Subsequently when I was able to connect to my home network (see below), upon any serious wifi usage (e.g. loading a video), or even intermittently, the wifi would drop and the card “shut down” like previously mentioned, requiring a restart. 


Searching online for a solution revealed many other people with similar problems with acer laptops, qualcomm QCA61x4 adapters and connectivity issues (unable to connect to network; connection drops frequently; poor speeds, etc.). 


I have compiled a list of fixes which I attempted, most of which did not help, and I hope that this will be of use to other users facing a similar issue.


Helpful:

1. Changing Wireless mode in Device manager to “01-11b” [Device manager > network adapters > Qualcomm atheros> properties > Advanced > Wireless Mode]

This enabled me to connect to my wifi network for the first time. However, while it was okay initially, on heavy wifi usage the wifi would shut down as previously described (seems to be what OP on this steam thread experienced as well https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/11/1693795812308693564/?ctp=2)


2. THE FIX: after attempting the fixes in the “not helpful” section below, I opened up an old defunct HP stream 11 (or 13, I’m not super sure tbh) I had lying around the house, saw that its wifi card was physically compatible, and replaced the Qualcomm QCA61x4 with the one from the HP. (Model BCM943142Y; see https://www.amazon.com/HP-Bluetooth-BCM943142Y-922608-001-792200-001/dp/B076YF3W99). I tested it and I have not run into any issues with wifi connectivity thus far (was able to log into my home wifi without having to tweak the wireless mode in device manager). My dad has been using the laptop for a couple of days and has not had a problem with dropped connection so far. 


Not helpful (basically everything else):

1. Driver updates/changes (read this whole thread https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/529139/qualcomm-atheros-qca61x4a-wireless-network-adapter-problem-error-make-wifi-router-down-limited/p1)

- Attempted uninstalling the driver and allowing Windows to auto-install the appropriate driver for the detected card

- Attempted updating the driver automatically via device manager, and also manually (see https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/comment/764081), rolling back to 12.0.0.7 (the one with “microsoft” next to it), and also downloading 12.0.0.916 from https://www.ath-drivers.eu/download-driver-nr-368-for-atheros-QCA61x4A-and-Windows10.html (for some reason updating automatically via device manager only updates it to 12.0.0.910 only rather than the latest one)

- Attempted installing “generic” drivers for the wifi card that were not recognised to be compatible by Windows (See Soma222: https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/385336/how-to-fix-your-wi-fi-signal-dropping)


2. Power settings

Basically the theory here is that the laptop is diverting power away from your wifi card inappropriately to save power. The various suggested “fixes” did not work so I don’t think this is the issue. 

- Attempted turning off power saver from device manager (see GAMING6698: https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/600253/wifi-continuously-drops-out-sometimes-after-5-mins-sometimes-after-8-hours)

- Attempted changing wireless adapter power savings from control panel (See Madmaniak: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-hardware/acer-v3-571-with-qualcomm-atheros-ar5bwb222/afd8e253-192d-4d6b-bcd4-229b59ed1e4b?page=3)


3. Wifi router settings

Did not suspect this to be the problem as other devices in my household are working fine. Still, I updated the firmware on my router, which did not solve the problem (though I guess it was a good time to do a firmware update anyway, haha).

FYI, my household uses TP-link Deco M9 plus mesh wifi system


4. Other miscellaneous settings tweaks 

- Disabling fast startup

- Resetting network settings

- Ensuring that Wlansvc (WLAN auto config) under Services is set up to run on Windows startup (see Arcticbird: https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/19689/help-intermittent-wifi-failure-aspire-v3-571g-win-8-qualcomm-atheros-ar5bwb222-network-adaptor)

- Changing other properties for the wifi card in Device manager such as preferred band, roaming aggressiveness. Only wireless mode made a difference as stated above, but this was not very stable either way

- Hardware: Switching the wifi antenna cable connections (see kp91: https://superuser.com/questions/1023244/acer-aspire-v5-wifi-connection-drops-proximity-issue)


Not attempted:

Editing DNS settings for WIFI — was not very convinced this would help (see https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/592592/qualcomm-atheros-qca61x4a-wireless-network-adapter-issues)

Conclusion: 

The issue seems to be quite complex. I don’t believe it is purely a hardware issue, given that there was slight improvement in the situation with changing the wireless mode. Some users have also reported not experiencing this problem when dual-booting the laptop with Ubuntu. I believe the issue to be some sort of compatibility problem between certain specific types of networks and the software/hardware of the qualcomm atheros adaptor (otherwise we would expect the number of people having this sort of problem to be a lot higher, such that Acer/Qualcomm would probably be best to do a recall of their product). 


Replacing the wifi card with another one would thus theoretically bypass this compatibility problem (because it’s a different adaptor, so the software and hardware are both different), and hence fix the issue. Another simpler fix I would recommend if you are not keen on opening up the laptop (I was comfortable because I wanted to install an extra 4gb ram anyway) would be to just buy a USB wifi stick to end all your wifi woes. 


Of course ideally consumers buying a new laptop should not have to go through the trouble of opening the laptop to change wifi adaptors, or even buying external wifi cards, to fix issues which have been prevalent for some time. However, I will say that at the price I bought the laptop for, even with the additional $20-30 a new internal/external wifi card is worth, the laptop is still a pretty solid deal. I chuckled when I saw this Amazon review by TechReviews (https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R3IVZGV7XN7U0N?ASIN=B01LD4MGY4), who manages to give his Acer Aspire laptop 4 out of 5 stars AFTER having to replace his wifi card. What a lad.

Question (because I guess this is a Q&A forum?): people who have encountered a similar issue, what are fixes that you tried that didn’t work, and what are those you tried that did? I feel that many people who post tend to post the solutions that did work for them, but fail to mention the many attempts at fixes which were unsuccessful.

    If it was my purchase, my fix would've been to button it back up with the factory card and use Amazon's excellent lemon returns policy for a exchange pronto. Jack E/NJ
