I have an Acer Aspire 3  A315-34 which had 4GB of RAM on board and an empty slot. Crucial mentioned i could put a 8GB stick in the slot for max 12GB. Only 8GB shows in BIOS and Windows. Later I read this has N4020 processor that only uses 8GB. It runs fine with 12GB but is there any advantage with 12 or should I just have the total of 8GB

The specsheet suggests that you can only reliably double the memory to 8GB max with a 4GB 2400MHz or faster DDR4 sodimm with a possible slight advantage of getting a dual channel 4GB module. A BIOS update might allow 12GB max with an 8GB module in some mainboards but no 100% guarantees. However, I see no harm and no advantage in running an 8GB module if only 4GB of the module recognized.
