I have a Travelmate P453-M now running on Windows 10 Pro version 1909 Build 18363.535  (Originally a W7 laptop)

Windows update fails to install several versions of Security updates.  Searching on MS Support I find that "Servicing stack update for Windows 10, version 1903 and 1909: September 8, 2020" has not been installed on this machine.

Is there a fix for this laptop or do I have to buy a new one?  2 devices on this machine do not work now, no suitable drivers (Card reader and Bluetooth) and now my HP Officejet printer only prints monochrome!!

I think it likely the updates issue isn't really hardware related. It's just going to take some diagnostics to break the jogjam for the updates. For the card reader you should be able to install the W8.1 driver in compatibility mode. Which WLAN/Bluetooth device do you have? They shipped with Atheros, Intel and Broadcom hardware, but again installing the W8.1 drive should work in compatibility mode.
Now, which OS version do you have installed? I gather not 2004 if it's trying to install 190x updates. Try to do the update to 2004 before trying to fix the update problem, since that would likely get the issues bypassed. Let us know the progress...

Thank you for your response Bill.

I did post what is my operating system in 1st line of my OP.

Actually I have now found that the Bluetooth is working but it did not when I upgraded from W7 to W10 via the MS upgrade site - don't ask me which!!

I also found a set of drivers for the card reader which I must have downloaded some time ago and forgotten and I have used them to successfully update the device which is now working  :)

However, MS update fails to install, for instance:  (taken from Settings/Update History)
    2020-07 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1909 for X64 (KB4565633)
    Failed to install on 24/08/2020 - 0x80070003

    and
    2020-O7 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for X64-based Systems (KB4565483)
    Failed to install on 24/08/2020 - 0x80070003

    and
    2020-O6 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for X64-based Systems (KB4560960) (5)
Last failed install attempt on 15/07/2020 - OxB0O70003

There's quite a few others failed as well as a few Definition Updates which failed and then installed OK

I have downloaded Windows10Upgrade9252.exe as recommended on here for another user, using a different PC.  I have not yet tried running this.  Should I??

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

0x80070003 is one of the more common errors, and doesn't tell us very much. The first thing to try is to bypass those and just do the 2004 update. They'll likely be moot after 2004 is in place. If that doesn't help you can wipe the SoftwareDistribution folder to remove any corrupted updates and let it repopulate. The last thing to try is to download each problem update manually and install it outside the Windows Update interface.
The next big update (2009?) is supposed to be out this month so it'd be nice to catch up before then...

Sorry Bill, I'm no IT expert so would appreciate more detailed guidance.
I have found SoftwareDistribution folders in C:\Windows with several sub-folders.  There's also folders SoftwareDistribution.bak and SoftwareDistribution1.bak
Should I delete these entirely? or rename them all to .bak in sequence.
    \SoftwareDistribution is dated 07/03/2020
    \SoftwareDistribution.bak is dated 18/03/2020
    \SoftwareDistribution1.bak is dated 11/05/2018

but cannot see where to download the 2004 update.

Finally, how do I install updates outside of the Windows update interface.

    Thanks for your support.

Delete fully the two bak folders, they were created during the process of fixing this type of issue earlier and are no longer needed. That should actually free up a bunch of space. Once those are gone go ahead and try to install 2004 (which I believe they've started calling 20H1 with the next one 20H2 later this month or early next month). Use the Windows Update Assistant. If that doesn't work grab a USB flash drive 8GB or larger and use the Windows Media Creation Tool on that same page to create an install image. With the install image inserted in your computer try an F12 during the early part of the boot to see if the boot menu is enabled. If it is choose the install image as the boot device and do the install of Windows 10. If the boot menu isn't enabled go into the BIOS and turn it on, then try again. Report back here with your results.

Prior to following the above advice, I consulted with my son-in-law who is an IT professional.  I was advised that it would be unwise to install the 2004 update if Windows Update had not done it since MS would be aware there would be conflicts with my machine which might create more problems.
He examined my machine and identified many error reports concerning the HDD controller meaning that there is a fault with the mother board of this machine.  So I'm looking to replace this laptop now.
It may well be that the update failures are what is giving me problems with my HP printer drivers.
