I’m upgrading my CPU in the Predator PO3-600 from a i7-8700 to an i5 9th gen and was wondering if it’s just plug and play or I will need to do anything to update the motherboard?

Nope, to move from an 8th gen to 9th gen likely means a MB replacement.

But don't 9th gen and 8th gen chips use the same socket? Won't a bios update suffice?

They use the same socket, but require different chipsets to drive them...

No, there were no i9 models in the 8th gen, the highest end CPU was the i7-8086.
