The mystery of the lost Gigabyte

I have updated an Acer Aspire One D270-28Dws from 1GB to 4GB. In the BIOS it still says 1GB, in the Windows 10 System Properties it says Installed RAM 2.99 GB. Anyone have a theory on where the last GB went?

  • Hi,
You may have 1.01GB allocated for Hardware reserved, go to Task manager,  move to Performance tab and check the Memory.

@brummyfan2: As far as I understand it, only 3 GB is used.

  • Try taking out the RAM module, wipe the pins and insert it again.

@brummyfan2: It appears I'm not the only one to experience this, sp I'll wait some before I take the machine apart to wipe the RAM module.

If you are running a 32bit OS this is normal. The last gig is there, but since the OS can't recognize all of it it's just ignored. A wipe and restore with the 64bit OS instead will allow you to see and use all 4GB, but you'll have to redo all your apps.

@billsey As far as I understand from the information I've received from Acer support, the Acer Aspire One D270-28Dws does not support 64 bit Windows?

IIRC your system has an N2800 Atom processor. Windows 10 through version 1607 supported those processor in either 32bit or 64bit mode, newer Windows versions do not support the processors at all, regardless the mode. There were version of the AOD270 that had an N2600 processor, and those don't support 4GB of memory, so have no need to run 64bit.

@billsey That's correct, my system has an N2800 Atom processor. It's currently running the latest version of Windows 10 (version 10.0 19041 build 19041) 32 bit, so I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you write that newer versions do not support  the processor at all?
  • Can you send a photo of the bios information tab?

@egydiocoelho In system information it says Bios version & date Insyde Corp V1.10 2013-07-23. Is this what you mean?

@egydiocoelho That suggests that 4GB should be possible, so the question remains. What happened to the 4th GB?
The computer is running much faster with upgrade from 1GB to 3GB (2.99) and upgrade from HDD to SSD, but I'm still curious to what happend to that last 1GB, and if it's made use of somehow?

As I said originally, the 4th gig will only be available if you change the OS to 64bit instead of 32bit.

But is that possible on this particular laptop? Is it not limited to 32 bit?

The N2800 is supported in 64 bit mode, as long as you don't go newer than Windows 10 1607, anything newer will not work at all.

I've tried to search for more information, but it's hard to find, and what little I find points to what you are saying. Despite this, I have managed to install Windows 10 2004 32 bit, so I think I will skip any attempts on 64 bit and settle for the 3 out of 4 GB and keep running Windows 10 2004 32 bit for as long as it keeps working. Having uppgraded from 1 GB to 3 GB and from HDD to SSD is still an substantial improvement in performance

Interesting. I'm not sure I've heard of others installing newer Windows versions on those old atom processors. It's nice to know they work, at least mostly. :)
