Just tried your suggestion Jack, thank you, but it hasn't worked.
When i switched back on i still had to go through the process of: 'Control Panel' - 'Speaker Properties' - 'Advanced' - '16 Bit' - 'Apply' ..i then have to leave that box open for it to take effect. And i have to do this every time i switch on my laptop.
The static sound on my machine is so loud and spikey, i have an inner ear problem which can be extremely painful and this awful issue has become the bane of my life.
I could change laptops but shouldn't have to. Like many others i'm not a technology person and have no idea why this is happening.
Wish someone from Acer would shed some light on this and explain what is happening, in laymen's terms..! :)
Thank you again for getting back to me. Hope you're well.

Open DeviceManager. Click 'sound etc' folder. Right click on the realtek audio driver and uninstall it. Then exit DeviceManager without trying to re-install anything. Shut down Windows. Turn the machine back on. Jack E/NJ
