I have one very old computer also having the same problem. Every time I turn on the computer, I have to key in the date and time even though I replaced a new battery. I suspect it is the the battery case becoming loose.

During the updating of BIOS/UEFI, what will happen if there is power failure? Will the motherboard go back to the earlier version?

No, the CMOS battery only affects the volatile data, such as the date and time, the configuration will just use defaults as long as the battery isn't up to snuff.
