I have this same issue.  I am using a new dell XPS 15 and connecting via standard DisplayPort.  When the machine sleeps and I wake the laptop back up the monitor stays dark.  Corner monitor light stays orange, no side buttons work and I have to totally pull the power on the monitor then plug it back in to get working again.  One strange thing I noticed, when the monitor stays dark like this; the laptop acts like it still has a display connected, I can move windows off screen in that direction and it goes all the way off screen as if it is going to the monitor but nothing happens on the monitor.  I tried updating drivers but windows says it already has the most up to date driver and won't use the downloaded driver even after I select it and say to try it.

It's the monitor. I replaced it will a Dell, and everything has been fine with my setup.
