Acer Aspire V3 573G fuse burned out after battery problems

Hello all,

I heard some noise from my laptop and it started to smell burned, so I shut it down (it didn't shut down by itself) and opened it. Two parts that seem to be fuses burned out. They lie under the battery cables (see pictures below). What may have caused that?

- I had battery problems before, the laptop would not start anymore without being plugged in.

- I was running Ubuntu on dual boot at the time.

- The laptop is 7 years old (battery from 06/2013)

- The laptop is still working fine without battery in it when plugged in.

- These are my specs:

Intel Core i5 4200U

39.6 cm (15.6") LED - 16:9 HD

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M

8 GB DDR3L SDRAM

1 TB HDD + 256GB SSD bought later

Those look like large surface mount caps for further reducing DC charge ripple to the battery. But I don't think they're the direct cause for the damage because only one side of their contacts is charred and not the caps themselves. Sure looks like a short to ground happened somehow. Or possibly a battery diode failed and allowed full battery current to flow in the wrong direction. Don't know if new caps would be re-mountable due to the charred mainboard contacts. New i5 mainboards cost about $100 but, on a 7 year old design, it may not be worth it if you still have an otherwise functional machine with the charger. Jack E/NJ

I think you have the V5 model, not V3. The battery itself has an internal current/voltage control circuit that probably is the source of the issue if the laptop still runs ok with the battery disconnected. Replacement batteries are about $30usd. Google 'V5-573G' 'battery' or the exact battery part number 'ab13b3k' for vendors near you. Jack E/NJ

I'm not sure though whether a new battery would restore all functionality.

You can see best in the second picture that two fuses were destroyed. Is it possible that the battery broke and gave too much current to the motherboard?

Given that these are broken and of course that you have expertese in that, do you think a new battery could work properly?
