FPS and refresh rate

Does 60+fps matter on a 60hz display? I have searched this on the internet but have found too many conflicting answers. So if I get about 100 fps in a game, is it going to be smoother than 60 fps given that i have only a 60hz panel?

Gameplay will be smoother but their will be screen tearing(horizontal lines and you may not feel)

Solution→
-You can fps limit to 90
               Or
-Turn on V-sync in game settings (V-sync wil complete eliminates screen tearing but increase input lag)
