Over the last week or so I've been dealing with my laptop just flat out 'killing' itself if I close the lid and unplug it with no system audio running. It can even be in as short a period as shifting my laptop from my desk to my bedside. (Same room not more than ten feet in distance and a two minute process of transferring the laptop and cable, at most.) This does not happen when the screen is up and even with the display turned off. I also have not encountered it shutting itself off while closed when proper plugged in. I have a semi spotty cable that I use upstairs for the simple reason that while it can be finicky about wire alignment, it keeps my laptop charged while running overnight and at worst I end up in hibernate in the morning. However when moving about to set it down for the night this can cause that power disruption, leading to a shutdown. The only ways I've found to prevent this is running audio (AKA having a full background process running) with the requirement of system volume being on at minimum. Otherwise it still shuts down. My battery settings have nothing set to shut the machine down, or even put it into sleep or hibernate outside of a critically low battery situation. Does this sound like some conflict with a recent windows update? A firmware issue? An issue between the battery and the display trip on the lid?

Open DeviceManager. Click batteries folder. Right click on every device driver in the folder and uninstall it. Then exit DeviceManager without reinstalling anything. Shut down Windows normally. Then turn it back on.

If still no joy, shut the machine down normally again. Then unplug the charger. Gently insert a paperclip into the battery reset pinhole on the bottom for 30-60 seconds. Then plug the charger back in. Turn it back on again.
