I have an Acer B247Y monitor.  The USB connection recognizes the microphone and the camera but not the speakers. This occurs when I use VGA.  When I use HDMI the speaker works.

Nope, the USB is just the hub that gives the ports you can plug into and the two for the mic and cam...

Which B247Y model do you have? There are at least a half dozen different ones with different features for each. Some don't have the USB hub, some don't have the webcam, some have different inputs and some don't have speakers. I'm guessing yours is the B247Y bmiprczx.
The issue that you are seeing is due to the fact that though HDMI has audio signals on the cable, VGA does not. Is there an audio input jack that you could hook to the audio output on your computer?

Yes.  I have the B247Y bmiprczx.  I do have an audio input jack but I thought the speakers would work through the USB just like the camera and mike.  I just like the idea of having less cable runs.
