From one second to the next it just shut down.  Now it "turns on," as in the light and fans come up (the cd driver can open and close too), and it produces a single beep like its starting up (the beep is the same as usual), but it does not go any further.
I've switched out both memory sticks, trading one then the other, and then switching slots.  No difference.

So it sounds like it's completing POST but the video isn't coming up, and POST isn't finding any video issues. Which GPU do you have? You might try removing the card and plugging into the motherboard instead. I can't remember for sure, you might have to enter the BIOS and set defaults to get the onboard video up.

I'll also add that I tried a different monitor (with a different connection type, HDMI vs prongs), but there is no signal going to either.
The PC will still shut down if I hold the power button for 5 secons.

Thanks, that's uncanny.  I was thrown off using the motherboard port because it had a "do not use" sticker across it, but that appears to be so people are directed to  plug into the GPU (can't tell what the GPU is, but ordering a new one now).  The display does work off the motherboard.
I suppose it is either the GPU or some part of the motherboard that connects to the GPU.  I'll know for sure when I try and plug in the new one in a few days.

Yup, they put those stickers on because otherwise someone would plug in, and they are automatically disabled when you plug in a GPU. Which card did you get?

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070  Just installed it now.  It just barely fits since it is longer than the last version.  Everything is working great.  Graphics are noticeably better when doing close ups on games.
