I too have an 9600m GS which wil not light up in an 8920G laptop.  I have tried both bios versions 1.14 and 1.15 with no luck.

I posted earlier about upgrading my 8920g from 9500m GS 512MB DDR2 to a 9600m GS 512MB DDR2 from and Acer6930. I had a lot of problem getting it to work, but it was probably operator error. Finally it worked and I thought I would let people know how I got it to work. When I swapped the card and rebooted I only had a black screen. I tried updating bios with I think every bios out there. I eventually had the Modded 1.16 version, but still black screen. I installed the old 9500m card and set to vga. I then shut down and replaced with new card, then connected with HDMI which was the turning point as I had tried other external monitor connections. Then windows started onto the external screen via HDMI and the drivers for 9600m GS were installed automatically. I do not know if the bios change is required and would recommend just connecting via HDMI first.
