Hello,

The original hard drive for my Aspire E5 575G seems to be failing, and I would like to remove it, or at least recover the data. However, when I open up the laptop, I can't seem to find the hard drive anywhere. My model has a slot for a second hard drive which I am currently using, but the original hard drive must be hidden away or something.

Is there anything I can do to get the drive out of my laptop, or recover the data? I cannot access the hard drive at all in file explorer or anything.

Thanks

You likely have an m.2 SSD card installed as the  original boot drive so it doesn't look like  a normal 2.5" HDD. It is shown in the mainboard below. It is held down with a single screw which when removed will allow you to pull the card out of the m2 socket. Jack E/NJ

Thanks a bunch, I didn't even know such a thing existed. I felt like I was going crazy.
  • Can you better explain the ssd problem? Have you checked the health of ssd with the crystaldiskinfo program?

I was actually able to recover my data. After giving my laptop a good shake (was running out of other options haha) and then rebooting, the ssd was recognized. I now suspect the cause might be a poor connection. Regardless, I am now running windows off my second ssd and no longer have a need for the m.2. I might open up my laptop and remove/replace the m.2 but for now everything seems to be running smoothly.

The problem actually ended up being a good thing because my laptop had been crashing or getting the BSOD randomly for a while now but that also seems to be fixed now that I'm running the laptop off the second ssd.

Probably correct. Maybe all it needed was to be re-seated a few times to help clean up the contacts in its mainboard socket. Jack E/NJ
