Why Don't I get the accurate SSD speed in my Acer Aspire 5 (A515-51G-59UX)?

Hi,

I have brought a 480 GB SSD of Walton Brand. All the other people who brought these ssd give a good review on this ssd. They are getting the right speed of the ssd or what the company actually advertise. But in my case I am getting half speed of the ssd. What is the problem in this? can anyone help. I have set my ssd to GPT partition style and I am attaching photos of the speed test.

The problem is not with the ssd. The motherboard of the model a515-51 has only 2 lines. that's what the service guide says:

Half the speed means half the PCIe lanes!

Since your machine is Intel based, install, if you haven't already, their RST from here (the SetupRST file): https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/29647/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology-Driver-Installation-Software-with-Intel-Optane-Memory?product=55005

It may prompt you for a reboot, but after that's taken care of open the utility and check the link width that's being used. 2x would mean 2 PCIe lanes are allocated for that port, 4x would mean 4. My guess is that your machine only allocates 2 lanes to that port, and if that's the case there's nothing you can do.

(maybe checking the SATA operation mode in the BIOS whether it is set to AHCI or RST + Optane?, it should show in the Main tab, Ctrl+S there might be needed to make it appear)

    Hi,

I have done what you said but in the Intel Optane Memory the ssd didn't show up. I am attaching the photo with disk part. So that you can see I have the ssd working.

Huh... are you running in AHCI mode maybe? Let's check something real quick, could you post a picture of the Device Manager with categories related to storage controllers and the like expanded?

Here is the picture you wanted. And I don't know if it is on AHCI mode or not. I haven't update the bios either. let me check really quick what mode I am in

Expand "Memory technology devices" and "Storage controllers"

And if I'm not mistaken you're missing something from your audio drivers, I think that "Detection Verification" is part of it.

Another maybe easier way of checking is to go into the BIOS (F2 at the boot of the computer) and go to the Main or Information tab. You may need to press Ctrl+S there, but there should be a place where it states the SATA operation mode.

Check the version of the BIOS you're running too, there seem to have been plenty of updates for your model.

I was trying to update the driver, but it was unable to install it.

Let's try to get you a different driver that works, show me the IDs of your audio card, like this:

Good! The driver is quite old though, newer Windows versions work better with newer drivers, if you want me to try to find you a compatible one I'd the the IDs, otherwise that's done and it's good.

As for the BIOS thing, I see SATA is running as RAID, what other modes of operation are there? (I'm sorry for making you reboot the machine again, they're in the Main tab, or ought to be after a Ctrl+S).

The machine will reboot on its own a couple of times. This is the latest for your laptop: https://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_2.02_A_A.zip?acerid=636872639637878065&Step1=NOTEBOOK&Step2=ASPIRE&Step3=ASPIRE%20A515-51G&OS=ALL&LC=en&BC=ACER&SC=PA_6

You'll need to be connected to the power adapter, and it will take a bit but not much.

Give me couple of minute. I am going to install the bios and find what you want.

By the way, if the only other option is AHCI, don't change to that one or Windows won't boot. There are some steps to make switching from one to the other to do prior to the change.

Aha! RST with Optane is what you want, switch to that one and see if Windows boots (don't despair if it doesn't)

If it didn't boot, it'd just be a matter of accessing the BIOS again and set it to AHCI, but given it was in RAID before...

I did the changes and there is no problem at all. But I did go again to ensure if all was working fine. There I discover that in the main section the SATA mode was RST with Optane but in the information section the SATA Mode was RAID.
  • It is a physical limitation of the motherboard. You can confirm hwinfo64:

The Intel utility keeps not seeing the SSD?
