I've heard the Windows 10 license is baked into the BIOS. I have a Spin 3 laptop that I have to replace the motherboard on. The system is not functional and I plan to replace the motherboard on my own. My question is, after I replace the motherboard are there any steps I need to take to avoid issues with the Windows 10 license? I'm a bit concerned Windows might think it is a completely different system and not boot up after I replace the motherboard.

    Hello,
If you want to use the pre-installed version of Windows, you have to buy the new motherboard from the Acer parts partner of your country.

Thank you for your response. I just got off the phone with the Acer parts partner and they want $700 for the motherboard. That’s more than twice as much as prices I’ve received from other places. If I get the board from someone other than the parts partner, is there a way to get the key for the pre-installed OS onto the new board? I suspect the answer is I’d need to purchase a new Windows 10 license.

Yep, OEM machines that ship with Windows have the key embedded in the MSDM table of the ACPI and it travels with the motherboard.

There is only one case in which you may run into "trouble": if there was a sub-model of that Spin 3 series that shipped without any OS, there's always chance the motherboard you get doesn't have a key baked into it. However, I'd say the ratio of machines that shipped with Windows vs. those that didn't is way favorable to the former kind, so you'd just have a different key, but the OS would still be licensed.

I think Spins ship with Home, but the same applies to different editions of Windows.

You can also run into issues if the MB you purchase has a different locale in it than you want. You might only have a license for the Turkish version of Windows instead of English. :) You can change the language in Windows, but it'll never be quite the same as the original...
