Dual SSD Upgrade - Swapping Out the 1 TB HDD for a larger SSD?

Hi. So I bought an Aspire VX5-591G laptop about 3 years ago. It has a preinstalled SSD (HFS512G39TND-N210A, 500 GB) set as the C drive, and an HDD (TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100, 1 TB) as an additional drive (D). I am running low on space, between Steam games, saves, coding and media I am at >75% used space on the SSD and about 45-50% of the HDD. I want to replace the D drive with something larger, and because what is killing the SSD space is the Steam games mostly I would like it to be an SSD. Something 2 TB or even 3TB for dumping my game files on there, as that is relatively easy to do. Any suggestions as to if this is possible and can the laptop handle it i.e. can it cope with the load?

  • I would choose to purchase a 2tb 2280 sata 3 ssd m2. Now, if you intend to replace the 2.5 "hdd with a 2.5" 2tb sata 3 ssd, yes you should also support it. If you choose to purchase a 2.5 "ssd over 2tb, you should pay attention to the height of the ssd. The service manual mentions the height of 7mm.

Goddarnit man! 2-3TB SSD I could use some of that!

It should be a piece of cake for the machine, the trouble is for the SSD manufacturers when addressing that amount of storage but for the system it's just another SATA drive. I have had good experiences with smaller drives of the EVO and Pro lines of Samsung, an OCZ (Kioxia now) failed on me, but it's anecdotal and 10 years ago so it doesn't speak for their reliability now.
