Hi there,

Im trying to update my sons laptop with Windows 10, however as its only got a 32GB hard drive its not allowing this due to space available. I've already got a SD card (64GB) inserted, but the laptop isnt giving me any options to download to this. Anyone else had this issue? If so did you manage to find a way to download Windows10 in the end and how did you do it?

Thanks

Sure, if it's formatted to FAT32 instead of NTFS it'll wipe everything off the card. Buy another card cuz it really shouldn't have other files on it anyway. They're super cheap. Only need a 16GB card. Probably less than $10. To format it, just right click on the card drive in file explore. In the box that pops up, click format.... Then it'll show you the current format which is usually FAT by default. Just choose NTFS and let it do a quick format. Jack E/NJ

Is the SD card NTFS formatted and empty? It's supposed to automatically use and hold the temporary files needed for the Win10 update to install on the small emmc system drive. But the emmc system drive itself should probably have at least 3GB  free space left. Better check its free space too, Jack E/NJ

    Thanks for that @JackE

i havent ever formatted it. Just inserted straight in from packet. Is this something I should do? Is there a site or guide on formatting with NTFS that you’d recommend? Will this effect anything on the DS card now?

     Thanks

Thanks again @JackE I reformatted the SD card and tried the update. It looked promising until this came up "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1903.  Updates are available, but we temporarily need some space to download. Remove some things you don't need right now and we'll try again."

Not sure why or how to now ensure these updates go to the SD card. I've gone through the settings etc so many times. Is there some hidden section that I need to advise the computer to use the SD card?

    Thanks again

The SD card only stores temporary files that Win10 needs to install its permanent files on the small emmc drive. So it's telling you there's not enough free space on the emmc drive for the permanent files. Remove/copy your own personal files or programs that you installed on the emmc drive and put them on another drive if you want to save them. Jack E/NJ
