Hi All, I'm currently using acer aspire 3 a315-41 and my system specs are,

ryzen 5 2500u
8gb ram
1tb hdd
current bios version : 1.06

my system doesn't have any issues till date.
Does upgrading bios from version 1.06 to 1.17 produce any performance gain, without any issues?

No. Not recommended due to the risk of adverse side effect issues or worse that can't be easily reversed. Jack E/NJ

I would, looking at the changes they seem significant enough to warrant a firmware upgrade:

Some users who upgraded the bios to version 1.17 reported that they had trouble starting windows when the notebook was running on battery power. In addition, a completely new feature, called REAL TIME CLOCK RESET (RTC), has been added. See what this feature means: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/br/pt/brdhs1/latitude-15-5580-laptop/late5580_om_pub/real-time-clock-reset?guid=guid-8d55a66d-c835-4685-b13c-a5e9659c765d&lang=en-us

I have a different machine, the official changelog is rather band:

Sometimes I wonder what's up with firmware upgrades, either changes are not listed or they're lacking in many departments.

There's just 1 microcode update listed for example, despite Intel releasing them quite often mitigating things, no CSME firmware upgrades whatsoever, etc. Maybe they don't care much for older machines, after all changes to the firmware need to be validated.

Like the "workaround" for noise in 1.17, what kind of a workaround? Is is just adjusting the fan curve or did they tweak the temperature at which it starts to throttle? The regular Joe may not need nor care for those, but it'd be nice to have more details about the changes.

If it was my machine that doesn't have any issues, I would NOT try to update the BIOS firmware. Why do I say this? Because it's neither safe nor worth the risk of minimal performance gains.  Jack E/NJ

That's respectable, many people do as you as well and it's a perfectly valid way of proceeding, but how would one know the performance gains or fixes would be minimal/negligible without flashing?

I find upgrading safe enough, at the same level or safer than flashing mobile phones with 3rd party ROMs, recoveries, bootloaders, etc. If done following manufacturers instructions there should be nothing to worry about, and if something went wrong it would be on the manufacturer. Things have changed quite for the better and batteries are already safeguards on laptops.

But yep, there's nothing wrong in keep using the firmware one has if no issue is appreciated.

    That's not good :s

But that sounds good, would save opening the unit to remove the little cell battery.
