My A515-51 laptop won't recognize an external monitor. Help?

It won't even detect it through the Intel Graphic settings. Yes, everything is plugged in and powered on. It's a Dell E2417H external monitor. The DisplayPort to HDMI cable is connected on both ends. I've downloaded the driver for the monitor. What's the issue?

Is the cable a DP to HDMI or an HDMI to DP? They are quite different and not interchangeable.

The monitor has a DP jack, so I got from Micro Center a DP to HDMI cable.

Yeah, that's just backwards. Your laptop has HDMI so you need an HDMI to DP convertor instead. The HDMI to DP ones are quite a bit more expensive, since they have to have smarts built in.
