Latest crash - with hwmonitor on screen

    Temperatures
      GT         47  35  87
     Core #0   45  34  91
     Core #1   45  34  90
     Core #2   48  36  90
     Core #3   48  36  90

So it crashed with temperatures between 45 and 48. It did not crash a few hours earlier when temperatures were between 87 and 91. I fail to see how changing thermal paste, and cleaning the fan will help, likewise swapping out the RAM. If I was assured that the RAM was the cause, then of course I would replace it. Likewise, if I was assured that cleaning the fan and changing thermal paste would fix my problem, then I would not hesitate. If you are suggesting these actions just because they are on a list of things to eliminate, consider them eliminated unless you can explain how they would help.
My personal opinion, and it is only an opinion, is that the problem is more BIOS related, maybe some other chip is overheating, maybe there is a faulty junction on the mother board.

Something is switching the fan on at maximum for 9.6 seconds, then switching it off for 22.4 second, and repeating. What could do that? The CPU seems unresponsive, so what else could it be?
  • If it is a problem with the bios, try this procedure: a) access the bios and then press f9 to restore it and then press f10 to save and exit; b) then restart the battery: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfhgnxUJoZo&list=FLVBqwtBw09_Z9tXo1Injakw&index=8&t=0s

And what would that restore to? The problem has existed since it was new - or within a few months of new. It began shortly after Windows 10 was installed, replacing Windows 8, Thus I initially assumed that it was a Windows problem, until It happened also in Linux (my laptop is dual boot).
Oh, and F.Y.I., the Acer Aspire E15 E5-511-P34X does not have a battery reset pinhole.
I don't know if there is a BIOS error, I guess that I was using BIOS incorrectly to mean everything outside the CPU and the OS. What I wrote in my last post was...

"My personal opinion, and it is only an opinion, is that the problem is more BIOS related, maybe some other chip is overheating, maybe       there is a faulty junction on the mother board.

In hindsight, I should not have referred to BIOS. There are many other components in my laptop besides the CPU. Logically, the CPU, the disk. the OS and the RAM have been eliminated as suspects. What is left? What controls the fan when the CPU is unresponsive? What could switch the fan to maximum and run it for 9.6 seconds?

to my opinion, the hdd is the weak link. change it for a ssd and use it as a external storage. the power on is 800 days but surprisingly, it has over 4700 power on count.
seeing an error on the apps, is not a rule of a faulty hdd.

The laptop is more than 5 years old, and travels with me. It is my only computer, so it is used several times each day, to catch up with emails, social media etc. 4700 power on works out as an average of 2.5 times per day. I doubt that the laptop is worth investing in an SSD, and certainly not before the cause of the problem I'm having has been identified.
  • Which version of the bios have you upgraded to? Have you tried to perform a power reset? To do this, turn off the notebook, disconnect the battery and the power adapter, and then press the power button for 60 seconds.

    i give you an advice.
since the freezing is occurring on linux too, it is a hardware problem.
now, if that does not bother you, run the computer by using a ubuntu live from a usb, and see if the freezing is still occurring.

Interesting, that is something I had not considered. It is worth thinking about. There are two problems though, 1) it can be weeks before the next freeze occurs, 2) I have dual boot because I need access to both operating systems, but mostly Windows. However, since the freezing is just as likely to happen when the computer is unattended, and not being used, maybe when I leave, I will just reboot with Ubuntu live. The question is, what action can I take if it does crash while running Ubuntu from USB? what has this exercise proved? If the problem is related to the disk, That disk is still running, and presumably still capable of causing the problem. If the problem is elsewhere, the same components e.g. CPU, Graphics, Memory, Power are still being used.

to my guess, since the current OS is on the usb drive, it does not matter if the hdd freezes. the os wont be affected. it only affects the files that you access on hdd. i am trying to get the hdd out of the equation, since i think the the hdd is the culprit.
  • Or maybe it's a problem with the hard drive's sata cable too!

Maersi, you are not the only one. I just ran into an Acer E15 that is having exactly the same issue. I recently upgraded it from W8 to W10, and put in a Solid State Drive. I also recently replaced the USB board that has the 2 USB ports on the right side of the laptop. I don't remember if it did any freezing up until this point, but the last few days, I was just letting the Windows Photo app, and then Picasa, catalogue a large number of pictures, and it froze with both apps open (not doing a whole lot of activity either). Same symptoms: the mouse freezes, then the CPU fan spins up quickly for 10 seconds, then off for about 30, then repeating the same pattern. I'll test the RAM now, but I don't suspect any problems there...

I didn't think that I could be the only one. The rhythmic nature of the fault would seem to suggest a very low level code issue. I am convinced that it is a software issue, but I have no idea what triggers it. I have not had the problem for the last two or three months, but it seems to be totally random, several times per day, or not for months. You said that you replaced the USB board on the right. I wonder if it could be somehow USB related, because neither of those USB ports are usable on my laptop. It seemed like mechanical damage - poor contact between the USB plug and socket, but I have not investigated, because I have a powered 3.0 hub plugged into the 3.0 socket, and that gives me everything I need.

Hi. As it turns out, this is a massive problem. And this problem occurred, personally, only with Windows 10. Nothing helped at all. The laptop would freeze at different times and the fan would make a lot of noise from time to time. In my case, the problem was solved when I switched to Windows 11. So far, I haven't noticed any freezes. Pardon for my English.
