Problem with the S271HL audio out?

There is mention of it here not working all that well, not at all, and from (I think) an Acer person, that port is indeed an audio-out port. (Note it's in the user guide drawing, but not mentioned elsewhere.) The thing is that a typical 3.5 mm TRS plug does not snap in nicely -- it won't even go in all the way, and it feels like there is a "spring" (no kidding) trying to push it out. Kind of mushy, for lack of a better word. It's probably defective, and as Murphy's Law would have it, my 4-year maintenance ran out in January.

    They sometimes have a rubber grommet down near the bottom to seal it. That means a little extra effort to get past...
