Predator 17 (G9-793) making the strangest noise ever

Hey guys, earlier I made a post about this noise and saying that it was coming from the HDD, turns out nothing is wrong with the HDD the sound is coming from somewhere else. It's coming from where the CD reader is placed and it's this buzzing noise that fluctuates in loudness. Apparently the hotter the laptop gets the louder the sound gets and it appears when playing certain games. I haven't played any intensive games in the past few months and all my graphics settings are on lowest possible. I'm left here scratching my head as i'm eager to know where its coming from, i'll do a more in depth tear down to see whats the haps.

These are videos of the sound heard with the CD reader attached and without it, also I noticed the sound goes and comes randomly when idle.

Thanks

The mainboard is failing. A component is defective and the electric noise is being picked up by the speakers after the component reaches a certain temperature. I had the exact same issue and it's basically a design flaw for this line of laptops. Starts to happen around 9 months to a year of use. It will get worse/louder over time. Only fix is to replace mainboard.

Thanks for the response dude, that really adds up. I haven't replaced a mainboard before, what should I keep in mind in terms of compatibility? Also is there the exact mainboard for my specific laptop? The model number is on the topic title.

If you're still under warranty, I would recommend sending the laptop to the service center to replace it. Otherwise is will be about a 700-800 dollar repair since the mainboard has the processors and GPU soldered on. If you want a bandaid to cover up the sound but not fix the underlying problem you can disconnect the speaker cable (subwoofer will still work and provide adequate sound).

  • It's a coil whine. Some users just disconnect the subwoofer.

Coil whine doesn't come from the speakers.
  • I know that. But users used to disconnect the speakers and the subwoofer as well.

So after disconnecting the subwoofer as shown in the video I haven't heard the noise since, however the drawbacks are that I can't use the laptop without having the charger plugged in and I can't use the mouse pad, its not working. As for the noise i'm super greatful its fixed
  • When you connect the subwoofer and disconnect the battery, does the same problem occur? https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/534951/acer-predator-g9-593-buzzing-noise-coming-from-speakers-under-full-load-with-video/p9

It's definitely heat related. We put an icepack underneath it, and the buzzing went away in 3-5 minutes. Quote was for  $800 for OOW repair. Not gonna do that for a 4yr old laptop.
Anyone figure out what is overheating?
I can always disconnect whichever speaker set is being noisy, but fixing the real problem would be nice.

I went through this exact issue about a year into owning the same model.

The best we (yes, there were several of us posting about this in December of 2017 into early 2018) were able to figure out was there was something faulty with the motherboard. Whenever the laptops were under heavy CPU/GPU usage and producing a lot of heat, the Geiger counter sound would start and build up in intensity. Disabling the speakers is like turning the car radio up louder so you don't hear the engine problem your car has. It doesn't address the underlying issue.

It seems there was a faulty run of motherboards used in 2016 and a replacement solved the problem. 4 years later and my laptop (which is used under load for work every day) has never again made that sound.

You can read through some of the extensive threads on the problem here and here (where @Acer-Manny closed the thread, stating the official solution was to send it in for repair/replacement).

I put a laptop cooler with a fan underneath it and turned down the graphics. Helps a lot, but not a long term solution.

Too bad Acer won't tell us what the failing component is or give a discount on repair for a factory defect. Yes, I understand that it could be an unfixable part on the motherboard, but they haven't stated that.
I'd even replace the motherboard myself if I could get the part for a reasonable price.
I really hate to junk an otherwise well functioning gaming laptop.

Mine unfortunately came back about 2 years since the motherboard replacement. I've since kept the speakers disconnected, and just use a pair of bluetooth earbuds. Doesn't really affect system performance anyway
