Hi all,

After a recent Win 10 update, I've been suffering BSOD crash issues and unable to boot Win 10. In BIOS it picks up the 256 M2 SSD but not Windows, I've tried booting it up with Windows USB and inside command prompt it won't appear either. I'm planning to buy a new SSD to check where the issue lies but realise the SSD installed is A key SSD i.e. with 4 pins.

Most SSD on markets are B key (6 pins) or M key but not A key? Has anyone upgraded their SSD and know which SSD will fit into this laptop?

Thanks!

First, have you tried to fix and/or rebuild the MBR (Master boot record) on the Win-10? As that could be your problem (see guides to do this here: https://neosmart.net/wiki/fix-mbr/)

The SSD that you gave a link to can’t be an “A Key” SSD its a type “M Key” 2280 it’s a Lite On Model–CA1-8D256 interface PCIe 3.0 x4 and protocol NVMe 1.2, Sequential Read; 2100 MB/s, Sequential Write; pSLC 600 MB/s and a MTBF of 1.5 million hours. If that is the SSD that you have from the link (https://imgur.com/a/TnXmPo)?

As far as Crucial is stating the compatible M.2 key for the AN515-51 (see here: https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/acer/nitro-5-an515-51) which is an M.2 SSD with the ‘M+B Keys” SATA/M.2 version: SATA 3 - 6Gb/s and they recommend their “Crucial MX500 250GB to 1TB 3D NAND M.2 Type 2280 Internal SSD” (M.2/NGFF (2280) Single Sided • 560MB/s Read, 510MB/s Write! I don’t know where you got the “A Key” for your AN515-51 see caption of what SSD it has.

The AN515-51 OEM type M+B Keys SSD

    AN515-51 suitable Samsung V-NAD SSD 860 EVO SATA M.2 from 250GB to 2TB

    AN515-51 suitable CRUCIAL MX500 M.2 2280 SSD 250GB to 1TB

The type “A Key” measures completely different they come in 1630, 2230, 3030 in PCIe x2, USB 2.0, I2C, DisplayPort x4 and for Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, cellular cards while the “B” or the “M” Keyed or the “B+M” Keyed are for SATA and PCIe x2 SSDs and PCIe x4 SSDs

Btw, your max RAM is 32GB (Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory) and you have 2x slots (2 banks of 1) and your AN515-51 came with standard mem of 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM and can take up to DDR4-3200 SODIMM.

    Cheers and stay safe.

    Hi StevenGen,

Thanks for your very detailed response, so the issue I had with Win 10 I've posted in several Windows 10 forums (https://www.windows10forums.com/threads/win-10-boot-issue-help.21364/) but still haven't got a solution. I'm suspecting it could be a hardware issue as I've tried a lot of different commands in CMD prompt but system still cannot recognise the HDD exist at all except in BIOS.

In regards to "A Key", I saw this image in Google which indicated 4 pin M2 SSD = A Key but thanks for clearling up my obvious misunderstanding and as you can see I am still a novice in the SSD field! So the Liteon SSD I've posted which is currently installed in my laptop, would it be considered a B key?

In regards to compatible SSD, so I can find a SSD with M+B key should fit correctly into the laptop?

Again appreciate for all the input here!
