Weird issue - I have a PC (via DP) and a macbook (via HDMI) connected to my x27. When I switch between DP and HDMI, the no longer selected input still thinks it is sending output to the monitor so it doesn't stop extending its desktop.

For example, when I switch from HDMI to DP, I would expect my macbook to think it no longer is connected to the monitor, and move the windows to the laptop screen. Any way to change this behavior to the normal monitor behavior?

In fact, even when turning the monitor off, both computers still think the monitor is connected

I believe they are looking at the port and seeing that the cable is present. I don't know of any way around it off hand...
