headphones are not working

ok I will try to explain this lucidly. I have a nitro N50-600-EB16. It has a speaker output on the back and a headphone jack on the front. Since I got the PC it worked that when I would plug headphones into the front jack a window would pop up saying "which device did you plug in?" with a drop down that had "headphones" and "headset". When I would choose headphones and click ok, it would mute sound through the rear output and play sound through the headphones plugged into the front only. Now all of a sudden, when I plug headphones in the front headphone jack, I get the same dialog box and whether I choose headphones or headset and choose ok, it continues to play sound through the rear output and nothing through the front headphones.

I really can't find any info on this anywhere and when I go into sound settings and see the "choose your output device" drop down menu, speakers "(realtek(R) Audio)" is the only option.

Anyone have any ideas on this or can point me toward the right info?

@Jazandapus I found a solution at least on my laptop: Uninstalled RealTek Audio Console and now my laptop recognizes every headset I plug in.

This is a driver issue, maybe it got updated with a windows update. Roll back the driver and check if the issue is fixed.

So I checked on this and in device manager I went to properties and driver tab and rollback driver is not a highlighted option. I tried to update it and it said I already had the best driver. I did disable and re-enable and it kind of worked.

When i disabled and re-enabled and plugged in headphones into the front jack, I was prompted as usual with "what device did you plug in?" and i choose headphones and clicked ok and then it played through both the front output with the headphones and the rear output with the speakers. If i hit mute, it mutes the speaker output in the back and not the headphone output on the front... what the heck does that mean?

I appreciate the suggestion, it was a good one. This computer has had a lot of little issues like this that I have not been happy with.
