Hello all,

First, I hope everyone is safe and well. Thank you for taking any time to read this.

Background: I purchased an Acer Aspire E 15 (E5-575-5493) near the end of 2016, and it has worked fine for the most part up until last week sometime. I've never been fully satisfied with the performance of this thing, but it has at least been usable and would perform fine once various processes would run.

Fast forward to last week, and the laptop has become unusable at this point. I can't even point to what event led to this, as it just happened so seemingly fast. When I start the laptop, it take anywhere from 20 - 30 minutes to even get to a point where I can move the mouse. Once I can do that, it takes 5 - 10 minutes for any mouse click or action to be recognized. I have tried various things to resolve this: *Going to recovery environment mode and performing a Reset on windows; *Trying various scans like sfc that end up just getting stuck; *Disabling a couple startup items that I saw in another forum thread.

I really have no clue on what to do next besides launching this thing straight out the window, as this may provide me with more joy at this point than continuing down this path. I'll hold off on doing that for now, in hopes that anyone out there has gone through something similar or has any thoughts on how to resolve. Thanks for anyone who takes time to read and respond to this.

Cheers!

Open ControlPanel. Search 'restore point'. Click 'create a restore point' in left pane. Is System Protection turned on in the box the pops up? Jack E/NJ

Hello Jack - Just managed to get control panel open and check this, and Yes in the "Protection Settings" section it shows Available Drives as "Acer (C:) (System), with Protection set to "On".

Good. Now click on the 'system restore' button above in the same box. Then click 'next'. Select a restore point with a date stamp about when the issue started last week. Jack E/NJ

Hi Jack - The problem is, the only restore point on there is from a couple days ago 3/31. I have already done the "Reset Windows" process choosing the "Keep your personal files" option. Even after that, there is still some issue(s) that is causing severe slowness and freezing.

Do you have any non-Microsoft virus scanners running in the background? Jack E/NJ

Yes McAfee was installed on there, but I uninstalled it via the Programs and Features menu.

Any others like Norton, Avast, AVG, Malwarebytes, etc? Double check ControlPanel Programs to make sure they're gone. Also open TaskManager and check for any processes that seem to be  consuming a lot of disk or cpu time even when you've haven't pulled up a browser or other apps. Jack E/NJ

Looking at Task Manager now after it finally opened. CPU standing at around anywhere from 17 - 20s-ish %. Memory at around 30ish %. Disk utilization was low but then shows 100% now that I let it sit for a while.

I don't see anything that sticks out as red flags to me in the processes running. There is an antimalware process listed but that is coming from Windows Defender. The 100% disk makes no sense because when I sort there is one that has like .1 % as the amount and the processes do not come near anywhere to 100% much less a single percent.

Click on the 'search' looking glass icon in the taskbar tray. Click the 'gear' icon. Turn off cortana, search history and online. See if it helps after rebooting. Jack E/NJ

Actually, nothing happens when I click in that search bar in the field or directly on that magnifying glass icon.

Right click on the Windows start icon. Try left clicking the 'search' function there. Jack E/NJ

    Things I have noticed -

*Clicking on Start, it will take a very long time for the Start menu to even pull up (like 5 minutes, or sometimes not at all and I have to wait for the laptop to sleep before I click the mouse to wake it up again).

*Once I can actually get into Start, and click the gear for Settings, every time I have tried to go to the "Update and security" menu, it does not make it there. It will just sit there indefinitely and never open that menu.

Right click on Start, and left click Search. Nothing happens for me. Tried a couple different times.

Also, one of the earlier steps I already performed yesterday is below, based on some researching I was doing. This may have something to do with the search options not coming up?

Open up a run dialog by holding down the Windows Key and pressing R. In the "Open" field, enter "services.msc". Look for "Windows Search". Go to the entry and right click and select "Properties." In the dropdown box labeled "Startup type," choose Disabled. After leaving the properties window, press "Stop" in the upper left corner.

Well, yeah. Enable it again. Press Win+R. Enter 'services.msc'. Then try it again. Jack E/NJ

Turned Windows Search back on via Services. Confirmed in Services that the status is "Running". Still can't get anything to happen when either clicking in the Search box, or right clicking Start and left clicking Search.

Also, finally was able to make it to the Windows Update menu, and confirmed that there is no update currently trying to run (wanted to confirm that).

Something else seems to be going on there, especially with the search function not working as it should. Did you do a cold re-boot yet? Jack E/NJ

So, I went scorched earth on this thing in a last attempt. I was able to move files off to an external drive, and then I made a Windows 10 media creation tool. Did a clean install of Windows 10, and that seems to be the ticket. I'm flying around now. Bonus on this route also seems to be that there is far far less useless bloatware that originally came with the Acer as well.

Thank you JackE for hanging in there with me and offering the help. Stay safe, cheers!

Congrats. Some of that so-called bloatware can be useful. Go to this link if any of the generic Win10 drivers don't seem to work correctly. https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/6752?b=1
