    I appreciate your help, Jordan.   I know you are probably still out of town and very busy!
    I did order the Crucial SSD, a 250 GB drive.  When the USB - HDD cable adapter arrives, I'll try interogating the HDD on my PC using windows file explorer.  Assuming it doesnt work reliably, I'll install the new SSD, as per your instructions.  G-D willing it makes all the difference.  If the computer is toast, wouldn't I need a 2.5" SSD drive enclosure to connect via USB to use the new SSD drive for storage purposes with another machine?

    Absolutely. I use the aluminized plastic anti-stat packaging material the new SSD's usually enclosed in as the enclosure. Open the package with a scissors, pull the SSD out, connect the cable, then put the SSD back in the anti-stat package. Scotch tape it around the cable so the SSD doesn't fall out. That's it. A fully functional SSD/HDD protective enclosure. Jack E/NJ

    Hello All,

    StarTech USB to 2.5" SATA HDD/SDD connector arrived, new 250GB SSD also arrived.  Removed HDD from Acer and connected it to my PC - drive appears with 0 storage, 0 free.  Installed the new SSD in Acer.  Following Jordan's directions to install Windows 10 from my installation USB.  Smooth!
    Just adjusting settings.... Voila!

    You experts are all phenomenal, geniuses, magnanimous specialists who deserve more praise and thanks than I know how to deliver.

    My wife is thrilled with her "new" laptop!
    It boots up FAST!  Way faster than when it was new.  And it shuts down very fast!
