Monitor is older. New laptop has HDMI.  I got a cable with HDMI on one end but when I connected the laptop, it had an error message.
It said "Input not supported".  Is there some way to be able to use this monitor as a dual monitor with my laptop? or do i need to buy a new monitor?

The convertor you need is an HDMI to VGA adapter, like this one from Amazon.

So I just got one of the adaptors just like the one suggested.  It still says "Input not supported".  In the windows "Displays" it doesn't detect the second monitor.  So, I'm getting discouraged here.  Are some monitors just not compatible?  This is an Acer 193W. Any other possibilities?  Thank you.

Remember that HDMI to VGA and VGA to HDMI are very different adapters. Which port is on the laptop and which port is on the monitor?

Laptop is HDMI (and it is new).  Monitor is VGA (and it is older).

Which specific adapter did you get? Can you link it here?

I've attached the package with the model number on it.  Also screenshots of the display settings when I try to connect the monitor via HDMI / RCA converter. Also device manager screenshot though today it looks different.  On some occasions it actually showed ACER monitor there even though the Acer monitor was not recognized in the Display settings. I also tried every single monitor resolution to see if that might make a difference -- it didn't. I'm hoping this might info and the screenshots might help someone to let me know why I can't get this monitor to work.  fwiw, when I connected the digital TV to the laptop with HDMI cable it worked instantly.  I just really want to use a monitor if it's possible.  Maybe this monitor just isn't compatible?

That looks like the right cable. There are several different 193W monitors, do you know if yours is a B193W, E193W, G193W or H193W? The B193W supports 1280x1024 resolution max, so would show up as smaller than a 1080P monitor. Do you think that might be what you are seeing? If you scroll down a bit on Display Settings you should see the resolution selected for your monitor, when you have one selected in the screen you are showing. What does it say for resolution and scaling when that monitor is connected? If you scroll down father to Advanced Display settings and click on the link, what does it show for refresh rate on that monitor? Here's my scale and resolution on this machine:

    V193W EJb

    refresh rate is 60.

Someone told me that my model supported 1366 x 768.  So I tried setting both monitors to that resolution.  Alas, that did not work either.

It seems like the Acer is not accepting the input even though there is an adaptor that should have converted it into an acceptable format.  Any hope?

    Thank you

What does Display Settings show for the monitor in the area I did in my example?

All I can think of is perhaps you got a bum cable... Perhaps a return and retry?

Thank you for your help.  I'm thinking this monitor is simply not compatible with newer laptops.  alas, a shame. I appreciate your trying.
