How to connect a B276HUL for dual monitro with a laptop

I just got a B276HUL to use with my Dell laptop but am having a problem getting anything to display on it.  I've tried connecting it with both HDMI and a "20 pin color display" cable as shown in the user's manual.

Each of those were done one at a time, not at the same time.

Does using this monitor require more than one cable?  Reading the manual I got the impression that in addition to an HDMI or DVI cable it required a USB3.0 cable.  Is that true?

The indicator LED is blue, so I'm assuming it to be OK.  In fact the display settings in Windows 10 also seem to detect it as being connected, as shown below

I also wonder if it could be something as simple as selecting the input from the monitor's menu?  But I can't seem to get the On Screen Display menu to appear as it's shown in the manual.

My older Acer monitor is probably 10 years old so I'm not at all familiar with all the new connection options.

Need some help.

So there are a couple of things that might be biting you. (BTW, the port you show is called a DisplayPort, or DP). When you are connected you can see the connection via those Advanced Display settings, what is shown on the Projector menu (Windows-P)? If it's set to PC Screen Only you would get your symptoms. Switch to Extend, Duplicate or Second screen only. Next if your laptop is trying to send a signal across that's not supported by the monitor you can get that symptom,

Unfortunately neither extend nor duplicate worked in the multiple display mode.  Tried both HDMI (1st & 2nd inputs) and the DP.

Does it show in that Advanced Display Settings with all of those inputs?

Yes it does, and someone pointed out to me that there wasn't even any kind of "no connection detected" message when it was on but not connected.  That, along with not being able to get the on screen menu to come up makes me think the display is dead.

I guess that's what I get for buying electronics on ebay.

    Thanks for the help though.

Yeah, though usually I've had good luck with electronics there. Try this, connect the monitor and make sure the Project setting is on Duplicate. With Windows booted take a flashlight and shine it at an angle on the screen. Do you see faint traces of the Desktop on it? If so the problem is the backlight. If not it's not as simple. :(
