This laptop in generally is not particularly sturdy. Under warrantee I've had screen, KB and SSD replaced.  For the past 6 months the socket to plug in the charger has gotten looser and looser.  Now I am lucky if I can charge it at all.  Even after removing all of the bottom screws I can't seem to open it up to inspect the part.  I'm afraid to force it.  Yes I have opened up many laptops before.

Anyone know how or IF this worn part can be replaced?  I a dreading the day I can't charge it at all!

  • Hello,
Do you own an Aspire A517-51G-54GK? If yes, you will be able to replace the DC-IN cable. Here is the part number:

@Samoyed This is a video of a teardown on an A515 with focus on the DC jack. It's very similar to the A517. You will need some plastic pry tools or stiff credit cards

    Larent,

I ordered the part that you listed from a Canadian company for $18. When it came, of course it had the correct female input for the external charge BUT  the internal plug where I plugs into the motherboard was different and would not plug in.   I fear this is the wrong part number.
There does not appear to be any ACER tech support line or source other than here.

I'm sorry :/. Could you post pictures of the DC-IN cable and the white sticker on the little bag?

Well I do not have the bag that the part came in but I did take 3 photos of the Correct connector that plugs into the MB.   The part they sent me OFC had the correct female external socket for the charger.  It was the OTHER end....the little white plug that was wrong.  I cut that end off and tried to solder the old, correct connector to the new female.  My soldering did not go well.  lol  Note the electric tape covering my solder attempt.

    1. Does your DC-IN cable work?
    2. Did you take a picture of the new white connector?

My second attempt to order from a Canadian supplier failed.  I got a part with the correct connectors but it was 5 cm too short.  It's possibly for a 14 in laptop vs a 17 like I have.  OFC this supplier has no phone number. Last time I checked Canada had a great phone system.  The short cable had 2 red and 2 black wires.  They are not marked other than color.  I soldered in a 5 cm extension with the 2 red wires as a unit and the 2 blacks as a unit.  Now the ***** thing runs great when the charger is plugged in but the battery won't charge.  Apparently one of the red wires goes to the battery and the other to the MB. GREAT!

So what do I do now?   I cannot believe the lack of tech support for this brand.  They are a major manufacturer yet rely on savy fans and hobbyists to answer their tech questions.  Where the hell is ACER tech support?   I will never buy this brand again.
