I have the Nitro 5 AN515-42, and my screen froze black. The keys instantly illuminated red, and stayed on. I tried to sleep the computer, and it wouldnt unfreeze. It happened once during video playback, a while ago. I held the power button to shut it off, and I had to hold it for a long time.

Today it happened again, After watching a video, I went and surfed the web in other tabs. And the screen froze black, keys lit up etc...

I never dropped my computer or anything. I dust it once a day. What is the issue?

Hi, Sorry to hear about your issue. Try the below steps and check.

     Power Drain and BIOS RESET

    1) Unplug the AC power adapter.
    2) Press and hold the Power button down until the unit goes off.
    3) Search for a pinhole that has a battery symbol next to it on the backside of your laptop, insert a small paperclip in the battery reset pinhole, press and  hold it down for 25 seconds. Then release the paperclip and turn the unit back to normal position.
    4) When the unit is off completely, press the power to turn on the unit.
    5) Immediately keep on tapping the F2 to enter the BIOS.
    6) In the BIOS, press F9 to reset the BIOS to setup defaults.
    7) At the confirmation screen, press Enter for Yes to load the default configuration.
    8) Press F10 to save your changes, and restart the system. Select Yes and press ENTER to confirm.
Try this and post your results.

No, the screen randomly goes dark, and the keys light up and stay lit. It happened twice, and I forced a shutdown with the power button.

It hasnt happened enough for me to tamper with the Bios. Besides, Acer updated my Bios the last time I sent it in for repair. It only happened twice, enough for me to ask about it here. I was kind of wondering like what if it happened more frequently and made the device unusable, but we arent their at this point in time.....
  • have you tried to update the drivers and bios?
