SPIN 1 - Touchpad half-way working

Hello there,

I'm wondering if someone here may have similar problem and may know how to fix that...

I bought a SPIN 1 a couple of months ago and recently I discovered that the touchpad works quite strangely.
Sometimes it works just fine (mostly when plugged to PSU) but most of the time it works just half-way.
While left side of the touchpad works 90% of the time - the right side works only 20% of the time.

For example when I move my finger across the touchpad AND if that happened on the right side of the touchpad - there is about 70-90% chance the cursor suddenly stops so I have to try several times to move the cursor from point A to point B on the screen. It is incredibly annoying.

However if do the same on the left side of the touchpad - it works OK most of the time.
Not always perfect - some times it hangs and freezes as well but success rate is much higher than if I use the right side.

I tried different drivers, I even tried different OS by booting the latest Ubuntu from a USB flash disk - all the same.
I came across this info: https://www.zachpoff.com/resources/acer-laptop-touchpad-fix/ and it makes sense since my touchpad also works sporadically and in one situation it works perfectly fine but in other situation (when I am on a train for example - more humid? More static electricity on my body??) it just dies as I described above.

Any ideas guys?
To me it looks like a hardware problem but I am afraid that if I send the laptop to get it repaired they may turn it on, touch the touchpad a few times and find no problem in their conntrolled environment (in a room with low humidity and no static charge etc)...

thanks.

  • Hi,
Have you checked whether the Touchpad is in Advanced mode in BIOS? If you haven't, go to BIOS and move to Main tab and check whether it's in Basic mode, if it's in Basic mode switch to Advanced mode.

    Hi brummyfan2,
    yes, I did check that.
I even tried to switch it to "Basic" mode to see if that makes any difference.
Well - it did not which kind of makes sense if this is indeed a hardware issue :(

Can you advise me on what is RMA process, please?
  • It would be interesting if you did the following:
    a) on battery only: check if the same problem occurs when you change to basic in the bios and also check in advanced mode;
If the problem does not persist, it may be a grounding problem.
    b) on the power adapter: check if the problem occurs in basic mode.
