Aspire A515-51G-72DB won't recognize close lid action. Probably a harware issue.

A few weeks ago, my laptop suddenly wouldn't power on or even recognize the A/C charger (no leds turned on either when plugging the chord, or pressing the power button) even if it was working just fine 2 hours before and no external damage happened.

I took it to a local technician and after almost a week, he made it work again, but only reported "repair on motherboard's I/O, Internal Power Supply and BIOS" (please note this is translated from Portuguese) to me. A day later, I noticed that the laptop wouldn't sleep when I would close the lid. This was strange, as this was an almost fresh Windows installation and power settings were carefully set via powercfg. Nevertheless, I checked those settings, found nothing. Partitioned my disk, installed a blank windows copy, still didn't work. Took it back to the technician and he said that it had to be software because he did everything right, so he checked with a HDD of his own, still no luck. He then took the laptop for another week to disassemble it and find the problem.

Well, he was unable to do so. I live in a small town and didn't expect him to be really good anyway, but I'm still with a defective laptop that isn't even one year old. Besides taking it to a technician in another town, which I'll do whenever I'm able to do so, what else should I check?

Here is a Speccy report of my laptop: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/SucyDhWhb6ipXZirIF7okbs

Thank you!

Someone else on Reddit actually helped me find the answer. As I said, it could not possibly be software, I had tested on a brand new Win10 install. Testing with a magnet, I discovered that the lid action could still be triggered, it was just my lid that was missing the magnet. The technician probably lost it, so all I'll have to do is replace it.

  • Hi,
Go to Power Options(right click battery icon in Taskbar), click "what closing the lid does", select different options in the next window and see whether those options work, then switch back to Sleep and see whether it helps, for example, select Shutdown and check if it's working, then switch back to Sleep.

Nope. As I said, this was the first I checked, but per your request, I followed the instructions again and found that it still doesn't work.

  • This problem can occur because of the intel and nvidia drivers. Are there any drivers with problems in the device manager? What is the version of the bios?
