Hi,

I have a GX-792-73Z4 with 32 GB of RAM installed from the factory, in slots 1 and 3 (according to CPU-Z).

I want to upgrade to 64 GB, so I found this 32 GB kit from Crucial: https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct2k16g4sfd8266. It has the exact same specifications as the one already installed from the factory.

I installed the RAM, but the laptop stopped booting/POSTing. I tried switching the places of the new 16 GB modules, I tried installing just one, or just the other one. Same result. Removing the new RAM modules completely enabled the laptop to boot again without any issues. I have not tried accessing the slots on the back of the keyboard (the ones that have the original RAM installed from the factory), as that seemed to cumbersome.

What am I doing wrong? What am I missing? Please help!

Thank you!

I believe that the crucial rams' memories should work perfectly. Have you tried resetting the battery? What is the version of the bios?

Thank you for your reply. I've just checked and the BIOS is at v1.07 (I remember manually updating it last year when I did a fresh reinstall, I think it came with v1.05 from the factory). Also, I did not know about resetting the battery. How do I do that? Should I install the new RAM, reset the battery, and then try booting?

I found about the pinhole used to reset the battery. Will report back soon.

I didn't know that. The most I waited is about 30 seconds (I believe). How long should I wait?

Correct RAM for your model, the part number is almost identical but this one has an "A" at the end. I think you received faulty sticks

The kit you recommended seems to be CL17 (the factory one is CL19), and 2400 MHz (the factory one is 2666 MHz). I don't know how to test if my RAM is DOA without completely disassembling my laptop to replace the factory sticks. I will try to find another laptop. Will update as soon as I have new intel.

CL17 is faster than CL 19 so it will operate at CL19 but is fully compatible. Your laptop supports 2400 to 2666mhz. I think that you still received faulty sticks so I would send them back for a replacement, replacing a laptop due to a fairly routine issue seems a bit extreme, I would match the RAM with the exact same Kingston RAM for a perfect match
