It's hooked up to a Samsung laptop via HDMI. If I plug earphones into the monitor output jack, I get the sound but if not, no sound from either the monitor nor my computer.

as per this link https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/UM.QR0AA.003 it shows your device has 2 speakers. So, in your laptop go to control panel > click on sound > under playback devices > look for monitor speakers.. select it and set it as default. Then test and check.. Make sure volume levels are max on both the laptop and monitor

In the version of Windows 10 I am running on this computer, when I select the R240HY speaker, there is a way to TEST it but no way to set it as a DEFAULT. There is a Windows TROUBLESHOOTING function for audio devices. When I run it on the R240HY speaker, it couldn't fix it, even after apparently loading a new driver. By the way, the link you suggested seems to be for the "R240HY bmiuzx" monitor. Mine is an "R24HY bidx". Does that make a difference?

Oh, and the TEST of the R240HY speaker was unsuccessful. No sound at all.

The R240HY BIDX has audio output but no speakers. the BMIUZX and ABMIDX SKUs have speakers built in.
