Yes, I have read previous threads, but I was asked to create a new thread by a mod.
I wanted to see if anyone had any luck installing an nvme SSD in the M.2 port on the R5-571t-59c.

From what I gather, this model has a SATA M.2, vs a PCIe/nvme M,2 port, despite only having the M Key notch on the port, ie. nvme.
I learned this the hard way, after purchasing a 500GB Samsung Evo 970 M.2 SSD (nvme.) I then read the other threads afterwards, in which some R5-571t users got an nvme to be recognized. But, not able to use it as a boot drive, as the BIOS won't detect an m.2 drive [without a custom BIOS?]

That being said, different users had different levels of luck as to what they were able to accomplish. And it was never really spelled out which r5-571t models were capable of what, with lots of mixed messages and levels of luck.

Based on comments from other threads, I have already formatted the drive using a USB external m.2 enclosure that I purchased the day after failing. However, HWinfo will not even detect the drive when in the m.2 port, which conflicts with what other r5-571t users have been able to achieve with nvme drives.

So...
1) I wanted to see if anyone was able to get their r5-571t-59c to detect an nvme (yes, I know I won't get nvme speeds, and it'll be limited to 8GT/s, ie. 985MB/s. Which is still faster than, 6Gbps SATA, ie 750MB/s)
Any PCIe detection would make me happy at this point.

2) If you got nvme to be recognized in some way, shape or form, what did you do to enable this? ie. cloning the driver, editing the BIOS, etc.

3)Any other info you guys can provide. I can still return the drive for another 3-4 days, but figured I'd give it 1 last hail mary.
(I paid $64 for it, which is cheaper than the Samsung Evo 860 m.2 (SATA), via a multi-step staples deal. Besides wanting to harness the nvme speed in a future computer, down the line)

I have a skylake i5-6200u processor. Currently having trouble finding something that says if it's 6th or 7th gen, but I think it's 7th gen (some skylakes were 6th, some were 7th gen, according to the skylake wiki page) I attached screenshots of the HWinfo processor ingo

It doesn't say SSD in the info tab, but it does list my 2.5" SSD. And, my 2.5" SSD is also displayed as HDD0 for the boot tab, but nothing that says SSD as the boot device. I attached a screenshot of each

The images above also show that despite Acer [and all ram sites] claiming that the mobo could only handle 8GB ram chips, or a 12GB max, it does in fact support 16GB ram chips, and 20GB max. I didn't even bother trying a 32GB ram chip, since that would be excessive for my usages.

Image that got removed, due to not enough being blurred out.
MOD: If you see this, I need your help with something else.

Yep. The last comment is the Mod asking me to create a new thread. Even though I was specifically targeting one user with the exact same model (r5-571t-59c), who stated he purchased the same m.2 SSD (Samsung Evo 970). To see if he specifically, had any luck getting it to work....

  • I think the difference is in the fact that some models use seventh generation processors while other models use a sixth generation processor.

That's a good possibility. Doing some more googling, I found out the i5-6200u was a 6th generation.
Why oh why couldn't I have waited a little bit longer before buying my laptop...

Looks like I'll keep this one for 5-10yrs (purchased 01/02/2017), to prevent buying a laptop right on the cusp of a major tech revolution.

Or maybe I'll just buy a desktop, as they're upgrade friendly. And, just miracast the desktop to this current laptop (think in terms of chromecast or other wireless mirroring tools.) Yes, it's a thing, and worthwhile as I never take the laptop out of the house, let alone the room. Let alone the massive speed differences between laptops/desktops, and the ability to change CPU's/GPU's, and add things that weren't built into the OEM computer.

Plus, if I don't like my current 15.6" IPS HD screen or it breaks, I could always buy a laptop shell for under $79 (literally just a screen, keyboard, touchpad, battery and I assume a wireless card.) Time to start researching desktop parts, if I can get a case/power supply dirt cheap before I need to build one. Plus, I'll actually be able to play PC games for once, something impossible with almost every acer laptop, as soldered intel HD graphics cards are super common (and even the much better Acer Nvidia cards are usually pretty terrible for gaming. For reference, my Intel HD graphics 520 ranked 4.6% when I benchmarked it on the userbenchmarks website. They categorize anything under 10% as "Terrible")

  • It would be interesting if you expanded pcie ports using hwinfo64.
